Dear Readers,

The recent volcanic eruption in Iceland and the consequent major problems in European air transportation for over a week, with worldwide effects and impact, showed in a clear and dramatic way how powerless we are in the face of nature. A thought crossed through our minds: ‘How something happening so far, can produce so many changes to our daily lives? This eruption of Eyjafjallajökull, small in the global scale of volcanic eruptions, managed to bring most of global transportation industry to a sudden halt, while reminding us all that we, as inventors of the modern technology, sometimes seem to forget how vulnerable our inventions are when submitted to the natural state of being.

Net Technologies is launching a New Tool !

Radio (RF) Planning is one of the major steps that have to be made towards the design and establishment of any wireless network. Its significance does not lie on technical level only, but on financial and managerial level as well. It is a “tool” that can highly assist the decision making procedures, eliminating the possibility of unwanted cost or performance modifications through network deployment phase. Valuable information is provided to potential network owners that make RF planning a definite prerequisite for the establishment of a Wireless Network Read more

Our Experience in Field Measurements for Oil and Gas Companies

“Conducting field measurements in extreme conditions is not an easy job” says Mr. Dimitris Antonopoulos, Net Technologies field engineer, referring to his experiences with Oil and Gas companies in the Gulf. For the planning and implementation of a communication network, the site survey and site inspection is one of the major tasks and prerequisite for successful project completion. The site survey results are used by a team of radio network planners and project management as the basis for the network design as well as for the procurement of the network equipment. Field measurements, which are part of the site survey in a wireless communication system, are therefore crucial .Read more

Net Technologies - Part of the High Tech Environment of Finland
by Hilkka Jappinen, Partner, Net Technologies.

After several years we have enjoyed a real winter in Helsinki, the capital of Finland. During the first month of the year the temperature was continuously under zero and several days even reaching -20 °C. This is very nice. In Finland we are used to these hard weather conditions and all the daily activities, such as transportation, communications, schools, public organisations etc. are working properly every day of the year.

Until the Second World War, Finland relied heavily on agriculture, but the period after the war forced Finland to build and expand its industrial base to metal and paper industries. The saying “Finland got one foot made of metal and other one made of wood” refers to this.

The growth of the Finnish telecommunication industry to its present dimension has its roots in other industries. For instance, the strong paper industry required development of processes including information technology. So, Finnish ICT companies’ co-operation networks stretch far into other industries and also into the world of the Research Institutes and Universities, which activity is extensively supported by the Government. This kind of networking was increased due to the need to concentrate on areas of core competence, to spread the risk and to exploit external expertise and information, (see more in Laura Paija: What is Behind the Finnish ICT Miracle?).

The Finnish technology policy began to emphasise information technology in 1980s. The importance of science in technology development was clearly acknowledged. This lead to establishment of TEKES, the National Technology Agent, which has taken a very active role in networking of companies and being a “Godfather” to new ICT companies. Tekes is the most important publicly funded expert organisation for financing research, development and innovation in Finland. This funding is targeted to technology projects that create in the long-term the greatest benefits for the economy and society.

According to TEKES web-site the total expenditure on Research and Development rose in Finland to EUR 6.9 billion in 2008. R&D expenditure in the business sector amounted to EUR 5.1 billion. Over EUR 2.5 billion of this was spent on electronics and electrical products (see more in: TEKES: Companies investing in R&D, http://www.tekes.fi/en/community/Companies/510/Companies/1383.

Net Technologies mission is to provide high quality services related to mobile, wireless and wired communication networks for the telecommunication industry and users of professional mobile radio. We are experts in technologies such as GSM, UMTS, TETRA, LTE, WiMAX and WiFi. It is very important for us to keep up our expertise and that is why we are investing in Research & Development. Our network of partners consists of top industry players and research organizations, such as Nokia Siemens Networks, Elektrobit, VTT Technical Research Center of Finland, Anite Wireless, Corenet and Lemcon Networks.

We have heard many jokes about the reason, why Finland is the country with advanced mobile communications – for instance the men sitting on the frozen lakes fishing hours and hours and wanted to be communicating with their home and friends. The average population density in Finland is only 15,7 persons per square kilometre and most of the population is living in Uusimaa. In addition to the technology policy of the government, correct choices, networking initiatives as well as structured and hard work, perhaps also the distances between the people have played a role in creating a good motive to build and develop effective communication systems in Finland.
